Welcome to the June Edition
As we move further into 2026, organisations continue to face increasing expectations around health & safety, environmental performance, workforce competence and regulatory compliance.
At QHSE Aberdeen, we’ve seen growing demand for practical support across a wide range of industries, from occupational health assessments and ISO management systems to auditing, training and environmental compliance.
This month, we’re sharing some of the key topics currently affecting businesses, alongside an update on our continued growth and recent project work.
Growing to Meet Demand
It continues to be a busy and exciting period for QHSE Aberdeen.
Over the past few months, we have expanded our team with the addition of Chris, QHSE Advisor, Elaine, Senior QHSE Advisor, and Fiona FitzGerald, who joins us as Head of Operations.
As our client base continues to grow, strengthening our team allows us to further enhance the support we provide across consultancy, auditing, compliance and training services.
We’re delighted to welcome them all to the business and look forward to the experience, expertise and leadership they bring as we continue to develop our services throughout 2026.
Workplace Noise – An Often Overlooked Occupational Health Risk
This month, our team completed workplace noise assessments for a client operating depots in both Aberdeen and Great Yarmouth.
Using a calibrated Class 1 Sound Level Meter, we assessed employee noise exposure levels across a range of operational activities to determine compliance with the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005.
Deliverables included a detailed report issued to the client, including:
• Workplace noise exposure assessment by area, role & individual as appropriate
• Identification of significant noise risks
• Noise level plan showing monitoring locations and results (noise map)
• Recommendations for noise control measures
• Guidance on Hearing Protection Zones and suitable hearing protection
• Identification of any compliance issues relating to the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005
Whilst many organisations focus heavily on immediate safety risks, occupational health hazards such as noise exposure can sometimes receive less attention. However, noise-induced hearing loss remains one of the most common occupational illnesses in the UK and, unlike many workplace injuries, the effects are often permanent.
The Regulations require employers to assess and manage workplace noise risks and, where necessary, implement suitable control measures to protect employees.
Depending on exposure levels, these controls may include engineering solutions, revised working practices, hearing protection, employee training and health surveillance.
QHSE Insight: If your equipment, processes, workforce or workplace layout has changed since your last assessment, it may be worth reviewing whether existing noise controls remain effective.
DSEAR – Does It Apply to Your Business?
One of the most common misconceptions we encounter is that DSEAR only applies to major industrial sites or large chemical facilities.
In reality, the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR) can apply to a wide range of workplaces where flammable substances, vapours, gases, dusts or aerosols are stored, handled or generated.
We’ve supported many organisations across engineering workshops, heliports, manufacturing facilities, marine operations, warehouses and maintenance depots where DSEAR considerations were present but not always fully recognised.
A suitable and sufficient DSEAR Assessment helps organisations identify potential fire and explosion hazards, evaluate risks and ensure appropriate controls are in place to protect people, assets and business continuity.
For many businesses, understanding whether DSEAR applies is the first step towards ensuring compliance and reducing risk.
Training & Development
Competence of staff remains one of the strongest foundations of any successful management system.
As regulatory expectations continue to evolve, organisations are increasingly investing in training to strengthen internal capability, improve compliance and support continual improvement.
Upcoming courses include:
📌 Health & Safety for Managers
📌 Working Safely
📌 COSHH Awareness
📌 CQI & IRCA Certified ISO 9001 Lead Auditor Course – 22nd June
📌 IMS Internal Auditor (ISO 9001, ISO 14001 & ISO 45001) – 21st–23rd July
📌CQI & IRCA Certified Conversion Course – 15th–17th July
Our focus remains on delivering practical, engaging training that provides delegates with knowledge they can immediately apply within their own organisations.
World Environment Day – Why Environmental Performance Matters More Than Ever
World Environment Day takes place on 5th June and continues to highlight the importance of environmental responsibility and sustainable business practices.
Increasingly, organisations are being asked to demonstrate their environmental performance not only by regulators, but also by clients, investors and supply chains.
We are seeing more businesses being required to provide information relating to:
✔ Carbon emissions
✔ Sustainability initiatives
✔ Environmental objectives
✔ ESG commitments
✔ Supply chain performance
For many organisations, environmental performance is no longer simply a compliance issue—it is becoming a competitive advantage.
Businesses that proactively manage their environmental impacts today will be better positioned to meet the expectations of tomorrow.
Practising What We Preach
At QHSE Aberdeen, we’re proud to have successfully maintained certification to:
✔ ISO 9001 – Quality Management
✔ ISO 14001 – Environmental Management
✔ ISO 45001 – Occupational Health & Safety Management
Successfully passing our surveillance audits demonstrates our commitment to operating to the same standards we help our clients achieve.
We firmly believe that effective management systems should deliver practical business benefits, not simply satisfy certification requirements.
Looking Ahead
The demands placed upon organisations continue to increase, whether through regulatory change, client expectations, workforce competence requirements or environmental responsibilities.
Businesses that take a proactive approach to compliance and continual improvement are often best placed to manage risk, strengthen reputation and create long-term value.
Whether you require support with occupational health assessments, DSEAR compliance, ISO certification, auditing, training or environmental management, our team is here to help.
