Context of the Organization

Navigating the complex landscape of Quality, Health, Safety, and Environment (QHSE) management.

As we delve into ISO Management Systems, let’s focus on Section 4: Context of the Organization.

This section is fundamental as it sets the stage for your entire management system. It’s about gaining a deep understanding of your organization, its purpose, and the environment in which it operates. Here’s a breakdown to help you grasp what’s required:

  • 4.1   Understanding the organization and its contextEvaluate Internal and External issues that are relevant to the organization’s purpose and strategic direction and that can affect, either positively or negatively, the organization’s ability to achieve the intended results of its management system. The Organisation can utilise the PESTLE analysis tool to allow for focus on relevant issues, i.e., Political, Economic, Sociological, Technological, Legal and Environmental, that influence an organisation. 4.2   Understanding the needs and expectations of interested partiesIdentify Interested Parties (stakeholders) and their Needs & Expectations. The organization can develop criteria for determining relevant interested parties by considering their: possible influence / impact on the organization, possible influences or impact on the market; and the ability to affect the organization through their decisions or activities. Consider legal and regulatory requirements, societal expectations, and customer needs. The organization should have robust systems in place to monitor and review the relevant requirements of its interested parties. 4.3   Determining the scope of the management systemThe Scope sets out the areas of the business that are going to be managed in the Business Management System; the boundaries of the management system so that it is defined in a manner that helps the organization meet requirements and the intended results of the system. The scope should include details of the products and services covered and the scope should be maintained as documented information.

HSE will be inspecting manufacturing businesses that use metalworking fluids or ‘white water’ in their machining processes until March.

Not completing regular fluid quality checks is one of the common reasons that manufacturing companies, particularly smaller businesses, fail compliance.

The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH) requires employers to conduct a suitable and sufficient risk assessment for those exposed to MWF.

WINTER RISKS

Ensuring a safe and healthy workplace for employees, customers, and visitors is crucial year-round, with winter bringing its own set of challenges that demand special attention. As temperatures drop and winter conditions prevail, businesses must actively address potential hazards associated with the season. From icy pathways to snow-covered parking areas, prioritising safe conditions becomes paramount. It’s essential for businesses to tailor their health and safety policies to specifically tackle winter-related risks. This may involve regular monitoring and swift removal of snow and ice, providing suitable footwear and establishing protocols for adverse weather conditions. By staying vigilant and proactive, businesses can significantly minimize the risk of accidents and injuries during the winter months, fostering a secure environment for all.
